Creating something special for the whole community
Marbury Meadows is an attractive residential development of 55 homes in the Cheshire village of Wrenbury. One of its most distinctive features is its extensive and well maintained open space, which provides an important natural setting for the development and the surrounding community.
Paramount Block & Estate Management has worked closely with the residents and the development’s steering committee to ensure this important space is not simply maintained, but continues to improve and provide lasting benefits.
Through these discussions, we identified an opportunity to transform a significant area of the land into a species rich wildflower meadow, creating a valuable new habitat while further enhancing the appearance and character of the development.
Our approach
Rather than simply increasing the existing grounds maintenance programme and passing the additional cost on to residents, Paramount explored whether specialist environmental support and external funding could be secured.
We worked collaboratively with the resident steering committee and Cheshire Wildlife Trust to develop a suitable proposal for the site. This involved reviewing the condition of the land, identifying the areas offering the greatest ecological potential and agreeing a practical programme that could be sustained over the long term.
As a result of this work, Marbury Meadows was accepted into Cheshire Wildlife Trust’s Pollinating Cheshire project.
The Trust has agreed to support the restoration of approximately 2.4 hectares of land, with a programme of ecological improvements taking place over three years.
A carefully planned restoration programme
The project will involve much more than simply scattering wildflower seeds.
The programme includes collecting seed from suitable local donor meadows, preparing and seeding selected areas, introducing locally sourced plug plants and improving the diversity of the existing grassland.
Areas affected by dominant weeds will be managed carefully over several seasons before additional wildflower species are introduced. This considered approach will give the meadow the best opportunity to become established and remain resilient in future years.
Cheshire Wildlife Trust will also provide a bespoke management plan containing detailed guidance for the ongoing care of the meadow.
The outcome
The project represents a significant environmental enhancement for Marbury Meadows, with the initial restoration and three year improvement programme being supported through external funding rather than an additional project charge to residents.
Once established, the meadow will:
Create new habitats for bees, butterflies, birds and other wildlife
Improve the diversity and ecological value of the existing open space
Provide an attractive natural feature for residents and the wider Wrenbury community
Strengthen the rural character and long term appeal of the development
Help protect and improve an important community asset for future generations
While Marbury Meadows was already a desirable place to live, this project will further enhance its setting and provide something distinctive that residents can enjoy and feel proud of.
